Kuster Tax Cut Petition Gets 400+ Signatures From 128 NH Towns in Less Than 24 hours

Kuster: Bush Tax Cuts Were Wrong, Need Middle Class Tax Relief Instead

CONCORD, NH – Less than 24 hours since it launched, more than 400 NH voters from 128 different towns across the state have signed Democratic congressional candidate Ann McLane Kuster’s petition to pass middle class tax relief instead of repeating the mistake of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.

“Instead of supporting the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest, Washington should have passed tax relief for middle class families, kept the deficit under control, and invested in the job-creation that was missing over much of the past decade.” said Kuster.  “Now is our chance to finally get it right.”

As the original Bush tax cuts expire this year and lawmakers grapple with how to fix the tax code, the Bush tax cuts dominated the pages of the Union Leader, Concord Monitor, Washington Post, USA Today, and other papers this past week.

Annie Kuster opposed these tax cuts for the wealthy, while her opponent in the Democratic primary, Katrina Swett, supported them.

“Katrina Swett’s support of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest was wrong for New Hampshire, it was wrong for America, and now hundreds of Granite State voters are standing with Annie in her campaign to help change Washington and make things right,” said Neil Sroka, Communications Director for Kuster for Congress.

Swett supported the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans in her campaign for Congress in 2002.   Out of 211 Democrats serving in the U.S. House of Representatives at the time, only 10 supported the Bush tax cuts, which passed in the spring of 2001. Kuster’s petition is available at http://www.kusterforcongress.com/bushtaxcut and is addressed to President Obama:

Dear Mr. President,

The Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans have wrecked our economy and driven our nation deep into debt.

Here in New Hampshire, 36.2% of the benefit of those Bush tax cuts went to the top 1% of income earners – people whose average income is over $1.2 million.

We support tax relief for the middle class – not multimillionaires.

[Signed]

Kuster is still encouraging New Hampshire residents to sign her petition, at http://www.kusterforcongress.com/bushtaxcut, and she will be mailing the appeal to President Obama next week.
